Man makes even the deserts bloom.
The only desert that still offers him resistance,
is in his head.

Ephraim Kishon

Characteristics and Vita

Michal Ashkenasi was born in the Netherlands and emigrated to Israel after World War II in 1951, where she settled and married on Kibbutz Gvar. Ashkenasi then moved near Haifa, Israel, where she lived on the edge of the stunning Negev Desert.

Ashkenasi is a widow, mother of two sons and has 5 grandchildren. She didn't come to art until she was 46, studied for 10 years at Haifa University and holds a master's degree.

Her abstract minimalist pieces aim to capture the essence of her thoughts and dreams, without any frills that would distract from her core message. Color plays a dominant role. Ashkenasi paints in large fields of color, usually with only one small object in it. In this way, she symbolizes to the viewer the "smallness" (significance) of the individual in the universe. The large color fields create harmony in her compositions. She paints in series to achieve the greatest possible attention.

Dramas in frames

The great expanses of the Negev Desert give the artist the feeling of freedom and space, of clarity and lightness, stand for a permanent new beginning and thus influence her work to this day.

She greatly admires the abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. Michal is a painter, photographer and storyteller who knows how to capture "dramas in frames" (original quote Michal Ashkenasi). She uses her art as an instrument, building bridges for peace and freedom, and is committed to fighting violence and discrimination.

After finishing her studies, she became a member of Horev Studios in Haifa, where she worked closely with the now deceased G. Davidovitz for two years. After his death, she cooperated with the well-known Israeli painter Jacob Zim.

Between 1990-1996, the artist ran her own studio and gallery in Sefad and was a member of the regional artists' colony. Today she lives and works in Kfar-Saba.

Since 1987 she has been a member of the Israeli Association of Painters and Sculptors and the "Point of View" group in Kfar-Saba. She is a member of the I.C.U. organizationin Haifa.

Ashkenasi's works are bought all over the world and can be found in collections in Israel, the United States, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Romania, France and Italy.

Why BURN-IN

The theme of meaning plays a central role in the BURN-IN exhibition round 2018/2019. The Israeli artist Michal Ashkenasi has always managed during her turbulent, eventful life to cope with crises positively, to grow and to act meaningfully. Art entered her life late in life, but from then on it became a fundamental part of her creative work. As a painter, photographer and digital artist, she convinces with her professional competence and artistic implementation. Her clear "visual language" convinces experienced art lovers worldwide, her works are in renowned collections in the USA, England, Israel...

BURN-IN convinced Ashkenasi's distinctive, goal-oriented path and her artistic statement on hot-button issues such as discrimination, war and the positive, meaningful approach to her life.

BURN-IN is very pleased to represent the multiple award-winning Künstlein from December 2018. Another milestone for our gallery.

Why is your art a good investment?

I think it is a good "product" for experienced collectors. For the layman it is probably not easy to recognize the quality and understand my art, but for a collector who can see the deeper nuances of the colors, it is an open book.
